Goals and Objectives of the Project

The contribution of the Swiss Agency for International Cooperation and Development (SDC) to the reforms of irrigation sector in central Asia was 5.3 millions Swiss franks from the beginning of 2001. The main funds should be invested in «Integrated Water Resources Management in Fergana Valley» Project. The Project «Customer» is the Interstate Commission for Water Coordination (namely ICWC Secretariat). The Association of two institutes - IWMI and SIC ICWC - is responsible for Project implementation. The Project Steering Committee (PSC) comprises of three representatives of Ministries for Agriculture and Water Resources (MAWR) in the countries covered by the Project, tree heads of Provincial Departments for Water Resources, on the territory of which pilot sites are situated, one representative of «Syrdarya» BWO, one representative of ICWC Secretariat, one representative of SDC Coordination Office and two representatives - contract executors (IWMI and SIC -  without vote right). PSC was formed according to the decision of all stakeholders during the final workshop on the Inception Phase in February 2002.

The Overall Project Objective

The overall project objective is «to contribute to more secure livelihoods, environmental sustainability and greater social harmony, to support agriculture restructurization in Central Asia countries through improving effectiveness of water resources management - by the example of Fergana Valley».

The Key Project Objectives

ą) To test efficiency of integrated water resources management (IWRM) at pilot sites with participation of water users and to introduce it into water management organizations in Fergana Valley .

į) To demonstrate alternatives of water and land productivity improvement at all hierarchy levels of water resources management
